Racing TV published this video item, entitled “That turn of foot! Frankel is flawless in the 2011 Qatar Sussex Stakes” – below is their description.
It is the 12-year anniversary Frankel recorded his first win in the Qatar Sussex Stakes for the late Sir Henry Cecil and Tom Queally.
Owned by the late Prince Khalid Abdullah, Frankel was sent off the 8/13 favourite in the four-runner event staged over a mile.
The race was dubbed “The Duel on the Downs” with Frankel taking on the Richard Hannon-trained Canford Cliffs. The latter came into the race as the defending champion, having got the better of Rip Van Winkle in a vintage renewal in 2010.
Canford Cliffs had started the season with two brilliant Group One victories in the Lockinge Stakes and the Queen Anne Stakes and was undoubtedly a huge hurdle for Frankel to overcome if he was to extend his unbeaten run to eight.
However, Frankel produced one of his most seismic performances, dominating from the front and drawing clear in breathtaking fashion to score by five lengths, leaving Canford Cliffs, who drifted across to the stands’ side rail in his wake.
Frankel would follow up in the 2012 renewal of the race, justifying odds of 1/20, but this was undoubtedly one of his best performances. Bolshy, brilliant and breathtaking.
