Wuhan Native Starts Campaign to Fight Coronavirus Stigma

Former journalist Yuli Yang is from Wuhan. When her city went under lockdown because of the coronavirus outbreak, she took to social media to call for compassion.

Yuli shared her favorite things about Wuhan and received an outpour of supportive messages from around the world. That’s how #GoWuhan began.

Yuli and her friends have translated the messages so that people in Wuhan can read them. The messages have been viewed more than 3.6 million times on Chinese social media.

After more than two months of being confined to their homes, most of the city’s 11 million residents are now free to venture out, with new infections dwindling from thousands a day in mid-February to just a handful a week.

Now, the people in Wuhan would like to give back with messages of support for others who are beginning to fight the pandemic.
