The Conservative Party is battling to hold on to one of its heartland seats in Uxbridge and South Ruislip on June 20.
A by-election triggered by the resignation of Boris Johnson could see the area fall to Labour for the first time this century.
In a Telegraph documentary, the Conservative candidate Steve Tuckwell says the seat has become the “Western front” against Sadiq Khan’s expansion of the Ultra-Low Emission Zone in outer London.
He argues any vote for Labour is a vote to support the “ULEZ” expansion, and is keen to avoid discussion of Mr Johnson’s eight-year tenure as the constituency’s MP.
Danny Beales, the Labour Party’s candidate, has about-turned on his support for ULEZ, and says he would fight it in Parliament and at City Hall.
Blaise Baquiche, the Liberal Democrat, says the campaign is “personal” and he is standing to challenge the Government over “Partygate”.
As the contest rages ahead of Thursday’s vote, Downing Street is watching closely. If the Conservatives cannot cling to Uxbridge, Rishi Sunak will face serious questions about his leadership.
