Malta became a British colony in 1813, and the British Parliament passed the Malta Independence Act in 1964, giving Malta independence from the United Kingdom as the State of Malta, with Queen Elizabeth II as its head of state and queen. Slovenia, a country in Central Europe, is known for its mountains, ski resorts and lakes. In Ljubljana, Slovenia’s capital, baroque facades mix with the 20th-century architecture of native Jože Plečnik, whose iconic Tromostovje (Triple Bridge) spans the tightly curving Ljubljanica River.
Switzerland is a mountainous Central European country, home to numerous lakes, villages and the high peaks of the Alps.
