UN Chief António Guterres at Africa Climate Summit 2023 | United Nations

United Nations published this video item, entitled “UN Chief António Guterres at Africa Climate Summit 2023 | United Nations” – below is their description.

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres said, “The people of Africa — and people everywhere — need action to respond to deadly climate extremes.”

In Nairobi on Tuesday (05 Sep), the Secretary-General spoke at the Africa Climate Summit. He said that an injustice burns at the heart of the climate crisis and its flame is scorching hopes and possibilities in Africa.

Guterres underscored that the continent accounts for less than four percent of global emissions and yet it suffers some of the worst effects of rising global temperatures.

The Secretary-General made a strong appeal for large emitters, namely the G20 countries that are meeting in New Delhi this week, to commit to reaching net-zero emissions as close as possible to 2040. “Assume your responsibilities,” he told them.

Guterres also said, “Developed countries must present a clear and credible roadmap to double adaptation finance by 2025 as a first step towards devoting at least half of all climate finance to adaptation.”

He added that they must also keep their promise to provide $100 billion a year to developing countries for climate support, and fully replenish the Green Climate Fund.”

The Secretary-General also said that we must all work together for Africa to become a renewable energy superpower. “Africa can be at the heart of a renewable future,” he said.

Guterres is now on his way to the ASEAN-UN Summit in Indonesia.
