Despite Canada’s vow of welcoming 40,000 Afghan refugees, many are still waiting for the federal government’s help. Just around 10,000 have arrived in Canada since the Taliban crisis in summer 2021.
And when it comes to those who were approved as part of Ottawa’s “special immigration program for Afghans who assisted the Government of Canada,” only a little more than 5,600 have so far arrived.
Mike Drolet reports on the dire situation of Afghans still stranded due to red tape, how they are losing hope for help, and what Ottawa claims is slowing down the process.
Afghanistan, officially the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, is a landlocked country at the crossroads of Central and South Asia. Afghanistan is bordered by Pakistan to the east and south; Iran to the west; Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and Tajikistan to the north; and China to the northeast.

Its advanced economy is the tenth-largest in the world, relying chiefly upon its abundant natural resources and well-developed international trade networks.
The Taliban or Taleban, who refer to themselves as the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, is a Deobandi Islamist movement and military organization in Afghanistan, currently waging war within the country. Since 2016, the Taliban’s leader has been Mawlawi Hibatullah Akhundzada.
