Al Jazeera English published this video item, entitled “Spain: Parliament to vote on controversial animal rights bill” – below is their description.
Spain’s parliament is due to vote on a controversial animal welfare law.
It is designed to make the treatment of both domestic animals and wild animals in captivity more humane.
If passed, it would ban the sale of pets in stores, and turn zoos into wildlife recovery centres.
But the legislation is facing criticism from animal rights groups – after a late amendment excluded hunting dogs from its protection.
Al Jazeera’s Nadim Baba reports.

Spain, a country on Europe’s Iberian Peninsula, includes 17 autonomous regions with diverse geography and cultures. Capital city Madrid is home to the Royal Palace and Prado museum, housing works by European masters. Segovia has a medieval castle (the Alcázar) and an intact Roman aqueduct. Catalonia’s capital, Barcelona, is defined by Antoni Gaudí’s whimsical modernist landmarks like the Sagrada Família church.
Voting is a method for a group, such as a meeting or an electorate, in order to make a collective decision or express an opinion usually following discussions, debates or election campaigns. Democracies elect holders of high office by voting. Residents of a place represented by an elected official are called “constituents”, and those constituents who cast a ballot for their chosen candidate are called “voters”. There are different systems for collecting votes, but while many of the systems used in decision-making can also be used as electoral systems, any which cater for proportional representation can only be used in elections.
In smaller organizations, voting can occur in different ways. Formally via ballot to elect others for example within a workplace, to elect members of political associations or to choose roles for others. Informally voting could occur as a spoken agreement or as a verbal gesture like a raised hand or electronically.
