U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg is in East Palestine, Ohio Thursday where he is surveying damage from a train derailment that released toxic chemicals into the environment.
Buttigieg announced a package of reforms on Tuesday aimed at improving safety for the nation’s freight railroads. He said the Department of Transportation will hold the railroad accountable for any safety violations that contributed to the Feb. 3 crash near the Pennsylvania border.
Former president Trump was in East Palestine on Wednesday, where he criticized U.S. President Joe Biden and FEMA for their initial response to the derailment.
“Biden and FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) said they would not send federal aid to East Palestine under any circumstance — they’re not going to send aid. I thought that was a strange statement because I’ve been working with FEMA for a long time — four years — and they were great with us,” Trump said.
