With Washington’s America COMPETES Act allocating $500 million to churn out negative coverage on China, are the principles of media independence and objectivity held dear in the West a thing of the past? Is the West paying lip service to freedom of the press? In the edition of The Hub, Wang Guan talks to Jan Oberg, co-founder of the Transnational Foundation for Peace and Future Research, to discuss some of the Western mainstream media’s manipulation methods. Oberg warns of the danger of a new military-industrial-media-academic complex that is taking shape. He draws on his experience and research to assert that in many specific cases, Western mainstream media coverage bears no resemblance to the reality on the ground. He reckons that Western media outlets are sliding into “navel-gazing” and explains why China’s image in the West has become so negatively uniform.
