Obama Urges Maui Fire Aid: ‘Thoughts and Prayers Are Not Enough’

Bloomberg Quicktake published this video item, entitled “Obama Urges Maui Fire Aid: ‘Thoughts and Prayers Are Not Enough'” – below is their description.

Former US President Barack Obama appealed for aid for the victims of the wildfires that affected the Island of Maui, in a video posted on Monday, August 14.

Obama, who was born and lived in Hawaii for much of his early life, said that he was “heartbroken” at the images coming out of Lahaina and Maui, and that action was needed to rebuild communities.

“The thing about it is though, thoughts and prayers in a moment like this are not enough,” Obama said.

“We have to step up and we have to help those families and we have to help Lahaina rebuild.”

The Maui Police Department said that there were 99 confirmed fatalities as of August 14, with roughly 25% of the area having been searched.
