As the first artist to perform pingshu on television, Tian Lianyuan has been a key figure in this traditional art’s return to popularity in recent decades. Pingshu involves a single performer telling a story. He has no musical accompaniment and only some very basic props. Tian believes that the secret to telling a story well lies in creating a vivid atmosphere in which the audience can give full play to their imagination. As for the various characters in a story, it’s up to the pingshu artist to bring them to life. Speaking about his audience, he says, “Once they connect with the character, they’ll follow their journey.”
