New numbers published by Statistics Canada (StatsCan) show the percentage of people incarcerated in New Brunswick that have not been sentenced has been rising steadily over the last decade.
The report found that of the more than 4,000 people incarcerated from 2021 to 2022, 2,118 were on remand awaiting sentencing or additional court appearances. The number actually sentenced was 1,387.
Compared to 10 years ago, 2,590 were sentenced with more than 2,000 on remand and 5,200 were taken into custody.
Some of that could be attributed to COVID-19 pressures on the justice system.
