This year marks the 10th anniversary since the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) was put forward by Chinese President Xi Jinping. Sri Lanka was among the first countries to participate in the initiative. In a one-on-one interview with CGTN reporter You Yang, former Sri Lankan ambassador to China, Palitha Kohona, shared his views on what the initiative brings to Sri Lanka. He believes the infrastructure boost BRI has provided around the world is a tremendous achievement. At the same time, when answering the question regarding some Western media’s claims that Sri Lanka is falling into a “Chinese debt trap,” he says only 10% of Sri Lankan debt belongs to China, and nearly 50% of its debt comes from Western financial institutions. “So if there is a ‘debt trap,’ it’s in the West, not in China,” he added.
