Denmark has a new monarch after King Frederik acceded to the throne, on a day that saw tens of thousands packing the streets of Copenhagen.
Frederik’s mother Queen Margrethe, who is 83 and a distant cousin of the late Queen Elizabeth II, had decided to abdicate and make way for a new generation.

Her father ascended the throne on the abdication of his brother King Edward VIII in 1936, from which time she was the heir presumptive.
