Chile’s largest baby? Newborn weighs in at 7 kg

Global News published this video item, entitled “Chile’s largest baby? Newborn weighs in at 7 kg” – below is their description.

Chile may have welcomed its largest baby ever on Thursday.

Weighing in at 7.105 kgs (around 15 lbs), the newborn boy was almost immediately separated from his recovering mother after being transferred from a hospital in Curanilahue, to a health institution in Concepcion — as a result of health complications.

Macrosomic babies, according to Chilean obstetrician Marcia Venegas, face increased risks of blood complications, including hypoglycemia, jaundice and polycythemia.

It is extremely rare that a birth occurs and the newborn weighs more than 7 kgs. In fact, it has never happened in Chile. “The heaviest newborn ever recorded weighed 6.7 kilos,” Venegas said.

Though happy to welcome his son into the world, father Luis Contreras said he was “filled with emotions because I didn’t think my baby would be in such a complex situation.”
