Chile requests international help to fight devastating forest fires as death toll rises to 22

Global News published this video item, entitled “Chile requests international help to fight devastating forest fires as death toll rises to 22” – below is their description.

Chilean Interior Minister Carolina Tohá said Saturday the government had called for international support from Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay to help fight the devastating forest fires that have now killed at least 22 people and ravaged thousands of hectares of land.

The dozens of wildfires, which have destroyed some 40,000 hectares — 99,000 acres — in central and southern Chile, caused the government to extend an emergency order on Friday.

People have had to evacuate their homes quickly in some communities as the fire burned through homes.

“I left my house with only the clothes I was wearing,” Puren resident Carolina Torres said. “The wind speed changed very fast, and everything started to burn. It was all very fast.”

The national forestry agency CONAF reported that as of Saturday, 80 of 231 total wildfires were being actively battled, while 151 were under control.
