Biden highlights importance of free press, cracks jokes at White House Correspondents’ Dinner

Global News published this video item, entitled “Biden highlights importance of free press, cracks jokes at White House Correspondents’ Dinner” – below is their description.

Speaking at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, U.S. President Joe Biden highlighted the plight of American reporters detained overseas, including Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich, who was jailed in Russia on espionage charges.

“We’re working every day to secure his release, looking at opportunities and tools to bring him home,” he said.

Biden also took jabs Saturday at Fox News over its recent $787 million settlement with Dominion Voting Systems and at the recent firings of former Fox News host Tucker Carlson and CNN’s former host Don Lemon.

“We really have a record to be proud of: (we) vaccinated the nation, transformed the economy, earned historic legislative victories and midterm results. But the job isn’t finished yet … I mean, it is if you’re Tucker Carlson,” he quipped.

Biden also poked fun at reporting about his age following his announcement that he would run again for president.

“I believe in the first amendment … not just because my good friend Jimmy Madison wrote it,” he joked.

The annual correspondent’s dinner is attended by scores of reporters who cover the White House, along with celebrities and government officials.
