How the Department of Homeland Security is using AI

Yahoo Finance published this video item, entitled “How the Department of Homeland Security is using AI” – below is their description.

Artificial Intelligence has an incredible amount of potential across so many different fields. Unfortunately that can also mean there are a number of ways it can be abused. Department of Homeland Security Under Secretary for Science and Technology Dimitri Kusnezov, sits down with Yahoo Finance Anchor Akiko Fujita to explain the some of the ways Homeland Security is using AI to aid in keeping the country secure from potential threats.

Kusnezov lays out an example of how AI can advance global scamming efforts: “AI threats that are global include some of the transnational criminal organizations that work to–for example, draw immigrants through Panama, up through Central America. There’s a lot of interesting disinformation. You know, ‘You’ll get Disneyland tickets. We’ll take care of you. Please go this way.’ It is a business model for people.”

Panama is a country on the isthmus linking Central and South America. The Panama Canal, a famous feat of human engineering, cuts through its center, linking the Atlantic and Pacific oceans to create an essential shipping route. In the capital, Panama City, modern skyscrapers, casinos and nightclubs contrast with colonial buildings in the Casco Viejo district and the rainforest of Natural Metropolitan Park.

TikTok, known in China as Douyin, is a Chinese video-sharing social networking service owned by ByteDance, a Beijing-based Internet technology company founded in 2012 by Zhang Yiming. It is used to create short music, lip-sync, dance, comedy and talent videos of 3 to 15 seconds, and short looping videos of 3 to 60 seconds.

ByteDance first launched Douyin for the Chinese market in September 2016. Later, TikTok was launched in 2017 for iOS and Android in most markets outside of mainland China; however, it only became available worldwide, including the United States, after merging with another Chinese social media service Musical.ly on 2 August 2018.
