Sky News in the UK reported on a new innovation coming out of the University of Oxford which, it is hoped, could provide coverage for the many thousands of people likely to need ventilators in the coming weeks of Covid-19 escalation:

When the coronavirus outbreak began, the NHS had access to 5,000 ventilators.

A new innovation from the University of Oxford may soon be able to boost that number, thanks to an innovative design for a cheaper ‘off-the-shelf’ version.

The UK Government put out a clarion call for more ventilators after their initial “business as usual” response to the novel coronavirus outbreak escalated. Researchers at UK Universities recognised that Covid-19 cases in the country were rapidly increasing, in line with – actually slightly faster than – cases in Italy, which is now experiencing significant healthcare demands.

BBC Newsnight excoriated UK Health Secretary Matt Hancock in a prolonged feature which explained how some claims had been proved to be inaccurate about both the available numbers of ventilators, and the time required to bring new machines into service in Britain.

If the UK’s National Health Service is to cope with peak demand, innovations like this one, which allow for rapid production of new ventilators, may prove exceptionally helpful.
