The Phoenix Tequila Festran from 11th – 12th December 2010 and saw hundreds of exhibitors and drinker convene for a fun filled day of tequila tasting and Mexican music. Major brands such as Mejor, El Caudillo, Camerena, Cazadores, Tres Agaves, Cruz and Corazón were all present.
Tequila is a protected name and the alcoholic spirit can only be so called if it is produced in certain parts of Jalisco, Guanajuato, Michoacán, Nayarit, and Tamaulipas in Mexico.
The drink is made from the heart of the Blue Agave plant – a spiny plant which grows a giant stem when left in the wild. Commercial production delays flowering to make the heart grow larger – sometimes up to 90kg. This pineapple-like fruit is then pressed for its musto and distilled into liquor.
