On Tuesday, interesting results included Liverpool’s return to the competition after a near five year hiatus. The hosts looked to be marking their return with a 1-0 home win over Ludogrets, before the visitors bagged an injury time goal. Steven Gerrard netted a late late winner from the spot, however, to take all three points at Anfield for the Reds.
Also on Tuesday, Spanish giants, Real Madrid, were once again in scintillating form as they destroyed Basel 5-1 at home. Newly crowned Spanish champs, Atletico, however, found life much more difficult, and returned pointless from their trip to Olympiacos, following a 3-2 away defeat.
Premier League Arsenal looked limp as they succumbed to a workmanlike Burussia Dortmund, who readily held the Gunners to a 2-0 home win in Germany.
On Wednesday evening, Chelsea welcomed Schalke – whom they defeated 3-0 at home and away last season – and were forced to share a point after a 1-1 draw. Barcelona rarely got out of first gear during a 1-0 home win over APOEL Nicosia, while Roma and Porto both collected significant home scorelines, with Roma winning 5-1 at home to CSKA Moscow, and Porto getting their best-ever Champions League win with a 6-0 home victory over BATE Borisov.
The match of the evening was in Germany, where perennial Champions League performers, Bayern, entertained Premier League champions Manchester City. It took all 90 minutes for the deadlock to be broken, with Joe Hart in the City goal in good, busy, form all evening, but it was to be the hosts who collected all three points as former City player, Jerome Boateng, bagged a well-struck shot from inside the area, which went into the top corner. Bayern collected their first three points courtesy of the 1-0 win this goal secured.
