Working from home exploded in the early months of the pandemic, and employees and firms alike have come to appreciate its many advantages. Surveys show increased productivity and about 60 million hours a day freed from our collective commute. So when offices are allowed to open up again, will they? Should they? And what are the implications if they don’t?

Nicholas Bloom is the William Eberle Professor of Economics at Stanford University and a senior fellow at the Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research.
