Diwali 2010: Sikhs and Hindus Celebrate Festival of Light

Sikhs, Hindus and Jains around the world have begun celebrating Diwali, the festival of light, as dawn rises on the 5th November 2010. Five days of celebrations fuse a plethora of traditions, languages and customs, but a unifying theme of special food, candles and lights unite the observers around the world.

Diwali is an official holiday in India, Nepal, Guyana, Trinidad & Tobago, Mauritius, Malaysia, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Fiji, and Suriname. During the holiday, small clay pots filled with oil are lit to celebrate the triumph of good over evil and families share snacks such as masala dosas and tari.

The origins of Diwali relate to several traditions including the enlightenment of leaders of Jainism, the release of Sikh gurus and auspicious events in Hindu mythology.
