Building Back Better: Dominica on a path from devastation to climate resilience

IMF published this video item, entitled “Building Back Better: Dominica on a path from devastation to climate resilience” – below is their description.

After 2017’s Hurricane Maria, the small island state of Dominica knew it needed to make a change. Still reeling from $1.2 billion in damage (226 percent of the country’s annual GDP), politicians created a new agency, The Climate Resilience Execution Agency for Dominica (CREAD). CREAD worked with the IMF and other partners to create a strategy that priced out all of the infrastructure, insurance, and social resilience needed to make the country the first in the world to become fully “climate resilient.” Since then, the country has moved forward admirably with new construction projects, but requires additional external financing from the international community to reach its goals.

Dominica, officially the Commonwealth of Dominica, is an island country in the Caribbean. The capital, Roseau, is located on the western side of the island. It is geographically situated as part of the Windward Islands chain in the Lesser Antilles archipelago in the Caribbean Sea. The island is located near Guadeloupe to the northwest and Martinique to the south-southeast.

The island gained independence as a republic in 1978. The island has lush mountainous rainforests, and it is the home of many rare plants, animals, and bird species. The sisserou parrot, also known as the imperial amazon and found only on Dominica, is the island’s national bird and featured on the national flag, which is one of only two national flags containing the colour purple (the other being Nicaragua).
