Kris Guay, who works in MIT Admissions, penned a poem capturing the essence of December in New England — when the days grow short, and our thoughts turn to family, friends, and home. Illustration, animation design and production: Christine Daniloff/MIT. Season’s greetings!

December
a few leaves are left
dangling from splintered branches
russet crinkly skins
curled up tight beneath a blanket
of grey white
while inside
fluorescent light insinuates day
onto faces of so many silent travelers
and buildings, street lamps, rows of houses
slip by in steady rhythm
all of us
sit waiting for the day’s approaching end
dreaming of family
of holidays
of heading home
yet it’s the slowly setting sun
that arrests me
like a candle in a passing window
an amber glowing spot
rubbed out of the coming winter sky
