Computing for the Marketplace: Entrepreneurship and AI

MIT Executive Vice President and Treasurer Israel Ruiz, who also serves as chair of the board of The Engine, offers an introduction to the session on “Computing for the Marketplace: Entrepreneurship and AI” at the celebration of the MIT Stephen A. Schwarzman College of Computing. This historic three-day event provided a thoughtful, wide-ranging exploration of the ideas behind the founding of the MIT Schwarzman College of Computing and the frontiers it intends to reach. Session includes: Eric Schmidt, technical advisor at Alphabet, providing remarks at the celebration of the MIT Stephen A. Schwarzman College of Computing. Katie Rae, CEO and managing general partner of The Engine, moderates a panel featuring Jim Breyer, founder and CEO of Breyer Capital; Jocelyn Goldfein, managing director of Zetta Venture Partners; Helen Greiner, co-founder of iRobot; Robert Langer, the David H. Koch Institute Professor at MIT; and Xiao’ou Tang, founder of SenseTime and a professor of Information Engineering at Chinese University of Hong Kong, at the celebration of the MIT Stephen A. Schwarzman College of Computing.

The MIT Schwarzman College of Computing, made possible by a $350 million foundational gift from the chairman, CEO, and co-founder of Blackstone, marks the single largest investment in computing and AI by an American academic institution, and it will help position the United States to lead the world in preparing for the rapid evolution of computing and AI.

In fields far beyond engineering and science — from political science and urban studies to anthropology and linguistics — some of today’s most exciting new research is fueled by advanced computational capabilities. The MIT Schwarzman College of Computing will create the next generation of highly trained computational thinkers and doers who can offer the world the cultural, ethical, and historical consciousness to use technology for the common good. Hong Kong, officially the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People’s Republic of China (HKSAR), is a metropolitan area and special administrative region of the People’s Republic of China on the eastern Pearl River Delta of the South China Sea. With over 7.5 million residents of various nationalities in a 1,104-square-kilometre (426 sq mi) territory, Hong Kong is one of the most densely populated places in the world.

Hong Kong became a colony of the British Empire after the Qing Empire ceded Hong Kong Island at the end of the First Opium War in 1842. The colony expanded to the Kowloon Peninsula in 1860 after the Second Opium War and was further extended when Britain obtained a 99-year lease of the New Territories in 1898. The whole territory was transferred to China in 1997. As a special administrative region, Hong Kong maintains separate governing and economic systems from that of mainland China under the principle of “one country, two systems”.
