Johann Smith traveled the world for more than a decade, playing professional soccer in England, Canada, Croatia, Finland, Sweden and Toronto. At 30, he decided it was time to embark on life’s next journey.
Now Smith, 34, is part of a unique cohort at Stanford. He’s one of 60+ transfer students on campus, who range in age from 19 to 51. He’s majoring in American history and taking the classes he’ll need to apply to medical school.
“I’ve lived one life already,” he says. “I’ve lived one dream. And now I’m here to realize another.”

A sovereign state, Croatia is a republic governed under a parliamentary system. It is a member of the European Union, the United Nations, the Council of Europe, NATO, and the World Trade Organization and is a founding member of the Union for the Mediterranean.
Croatia is classified by the World Bank as a high-income economy. Croatia provides social security, universal health care, and tuition-free primary and secondary education.
Finland is a Northern European nation bordering Sweden, Norway and Russia. Its capital, Helsinki, occupies a peninsula and surrounding islands in the Baltic Sea. The Northern Lights can be seen from the country’s Arctic Lapland province, a vast wilderness with national parks and ski resorts.
Sweden is a Scandinavian nation with thousands of coastal islands and inland lakes, along with vast boreal forests and glaciated mountains.
