A new film charting the journey of a maths genius sent to Taiwan to compete in the International Mathematics Olympiad begins filming on 22nd July 2013.
Rafe Spall (Life of Pi, I Give It A Year), Sally Hawkins (Made In Dagenham, Happy Go Lucky), Asa Butterfield (Ender’s Game, Hugo, The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas) and Eddie Marsan (Sherlock Holmes, The World’s End) have all been confirmed for the coming-of-age tale, which will be filmed in Sheffield, Cambridge and Taiwan.
The film is based on a real-life documentary made by Morgan Matthews called “Beautiful Young Minds”. The documentary followed extraordinary individuals on their journey to the Mathematical Olympiad. The programme later won a BAFTA.
The movie adaptation of the documentary hangs on a love story. Teenage maths prodigy Nathan (Asa Butterfield) faces a problem he cannot solve when he meets his Chinese counterpart, the beautiful Zhang Mei (Jo Yang). Despite his problems with people, Nathan ends up teaching his mentor, Mr Humphreys (Rafe Spall), more about the nature of love and life than the Maths instructor could ever hope to impart.
A date for release has not yet been set, though Bankside Films will be presenting the film to buyers in Toronto in 2013.
