The Ashes 2009: No Play on Third Morning at Edgbaston

Lunch is being taken at Edgbaston without a single ball having been bowled on the third day of this Ashes 2009 test match between England and Australia.

It is looking doubtful whether any play at all will be possible after rain which had been forecast as intermittent proved persistent all morning.

Rain is seeping into the pitch around the covers creating some very soft patches of ground which, unless we have a consistent dry patch, may prevent any further play according to match umpire Rudi Koertzen.

England will be hoping for play today, but both sides might have to settle for a drawn match if we do not see any play today, with three innings in two days looking unlikely at best: Australia may arguably be the happier after their first innings collapse on Friday; however, a draw is not without it’s advantages for England, either, as it puts them 1-0 ahead with only two test matches remaining in Ashes 2009.

There is still plenty of time for a positive result, but, it has to be said, the longer we go through today without play, the more likely a draw becomes.

A further inspection is due at 1:30pm.
