Google, one of the world’s largest internet-based businesses, has rounded up Western leaders for meetings on internet freedom at The Hague in The Netherlands. Telecom operators, bloggers and foreign ministers from United States, Canada, Estonia and Kenya were all present for the meetings on Thursday 8th and Friday 9th December 2011.
Dutch Foreign Minister Uri Rosenthal proposed the initiative and welcomed US Secretary of State Hilary Clinton, Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt and Google Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt to the Fokker terminal, where the assembled leaders criticised internet censorship and technology used to monitor web use.
Hilary Clinton used the platform to make a stand against countries which interfere online:
“It is most urgent, of course, for those around the world whose words are now censored, who are imprisoned because of what they or others have written online, who are blocked from accessing entire categories of Internet content or who are being tracked by governments seeking to keep them from connecting with one another.”
Six million Euros were pledged to help internet freedom activists operating under “repressive regimes”.

Its advanced economy is the tenth-largest in the world, relying chiefly upon its abundant natural resources and well-developed international trade networks.
Estonia, a country in Northern Europe, borders the Baltic Sea and Gulf of Finland. Including more than 1,500 islands, its diverse terrain spans rocky beaches, old-growth forest and many lakes. Formerly part of the Soviet Union, it’s dotted with castles, churches and hilltop fortresses. The capital, Tallinn, is known for its preserved Old Town, museums and the 314m-high Tallinn TV Tower, which has an observation deck.
Kenya is a country in East Africa with coastline on the Indian Ocean. It encompasses savannah, lakelands, the dramatic Great Rift Valley and mountain highlands. It’s also home to wildlife like lions, elephants and rhinos. From Nairobi, the capital, safaris visit the Maasai Mara Reserve, known for its annual wildebeest migrations, and Amboseli National Park, offering views of Tanzania’s 5,895m Mt. Kilimanjaro.
Sweden is a Scandinavian nation with thousands of coastal islands and inland lakes, along with vast boreal forests and glaciated mountains. Its principal cities, eastern capital Stockholm and southwestern Gothenburg and Malmö, are all coastal. Stockholm is built on 14 islands. It has more than 50 bridges, as well as the medieval old town, Gamla Stan, royal palaces and museums such as open-air Skansen.
