According to a new report by ABI research, the Android mobile platform has overtaken Apple in terms of worldwide app downloads with Google’s software taking a 44% market share compared to iOS’s 31%.
Experts from the research company pointed to the open source nature of Android as a factor in the platform’s success, in addition to growth in shipment of Android smartphones compared to iPhones.
However, Apple users actually download more apps with an average of 2 app downloads for every 1 app downloaded by an Android user. In the market as a whole, there are expected to be a total of 29 billion app downloads in 2011.
