First rising to fame as a singer in Mis-Teeq, the all-girl R&B trio of the early 2000s, Alesha Dixon found fame in her own right in a solo career, which included a smash hit “The Boy Does Nothing” – after an initially somewhat flat first solo album.
An appearance on Strictly Come Dancing in 2007, which she won, really propelled her into the British public’s hearts, and saw her get more support from music industry insiders for a second album.
In 2009, she became a judge on the same TV dance show, which she did for three seasons, before leaving to become a judge on Britain’s Got Talent.
She has also worked as a TV presenter on several shows.
Originally from Hertfordshire, in the UK, Alesha Anjanette Dixon was born in Welwyn Garden City, Herts. She has six half siblings.
After school at Monk’s Walk School, Dixon completed a diploma in sports studies, and was to take up a place at Loughborough University, but, while taking dance classes in London, was talent scouted by a production company.
Mis-Teeq – 1999-2005
Mis-Teeq was formed at a Fulham dance school, in London, when Alesha Dixon, Sabrina Washington and Su-Elise Nash joined together to form a trio group. They were signed to Telstar Records, and joined by Zena McNally.
Their music was in the UK Garage and R&B genre, which was popular at the time.
Mis-Teeq released their first single, Why, in January 2001. The track was not successful until a garage remix gained traction, and charted at number 8 in April 2001.

Zena McNally Departs
Zena McNally left the group at this point, making Mis-Teeq the trio it would become most known as.
The trio then released the track “All I Want” which was highly suuccessful, arguably their break-through hit. It was similar in sound to the remix of their initial single, and had a more UK Garage vibe.
It charted at number 2, behind Shaggy’s huge hit “Angel”.
Mis-Teeq “All I Want”
The trio released a succession of hits after this breakthrough, including “Scandalous” “Can’t Get it Back” and “Style” on their second album, which was called “Eye Candy”.
After a final track for Disney movie, Valiant, Mis-Teeq split to work on “solo careers”.
Alesha Dixon worked with Pharrel Williams’ N.E.R.D in the video for “She Wants to Move” as a podium dancer, in 2004.
In 2005, Alesha Dixon married MC Harvey. The couple would later divorce in November 2006.
In 2006, Alesha Dixon embarked on a solo career, after signing a £500,000 contract with Polydor Records for three albums.
She wrote debut album Fired Up. He first single from this album, “Lipstick” was released in August 2006, and charted at number 14 in the UK charts.
Her second single from the album, Knockdown, was something of a failure, however, and charted at a lowly number 45 on the UK Singles Chart in October 2006. In November, Polydor dropped Dixon from her record contract.
In 2007, Alesha Dixon took part in BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing, partnered with professional dancer Matthew Cutler. The pair won the competition outright, and proved very popular with the British public.
After this success, record companies were keen to sign Dixon – including, ironically, Polydor, who had torn up her previous deal. She signed with Asylum Records in 2008, on a four album deal.
Her first single from her solo album was “The Boy Does Nothing”. This track initially launched with muted success, and actually charted at number 86. However, downloads were in 2007 becoming a thing. People actually liked this track… a lot… it jumped to number 8 in the UK singles chart in week two.
The single peaked at Number 5 in the UK, and sold one million copies globally.

While working on Britain’s Got Talent, Dixon announced her pregnancy with her first child, with her partner Azuka Ononye. She gave birth to a daughter in October 2013, named Azura Sienna.
She had a second child in 2019.
A fourth solo album was put on hold while she had her children, but she continued to judge on TV talent show – including joining the panel for Season 2 of America’s Got Talent: The Champions.
Alesha Dixon has worked as a TV presenter on several shows and also presented awards. A natural in front of camera, Dixon is very popular with the public in the UK, and more recently, also in the USA.
