News is emerging today that England captain Rio Ferdinand has been injured ahead of this summer’s FIFA World Cup 2010.
The central defender has suffered a knee injury while training with the England squad, which flew out on Wednesday, ahead of the tournament.
Michael Dawson of Tottenham Hotspur, who had been on standby for such an occurrence will fly out to join the England squad on Friday evening.
It remains to be seen who will captain the side, though it will likely be vice captain Gerrard, after John Terry, the other England centre back, was stripped of the captaincy this year for off-field controversy.
Dawson, who has enjoyed a fine, injury free season with Spurs – a side which did well this season to qualify for the final UEFA Champions League position of fourth in the Barclays Premier League – should prove a more than able debutant and good backup for fellow Spurs teammate Ledley King who also has injury concerns of his own.
Now all we need is SWP to pick up a knock and Theo to fly out and we’ll be laughing!
ferdinand is a big loss but dawson has had a great season and he is everything ferdinand used to be, a great ball playing defender. Shame for rio, but good for england that we have so many centr halfs in backup.
