Formula 1 driver Jenson Button was forced to retire from a major triathlon competition in Fuerteventura at the weekend, after a promising start against world beating elite athletes. The world champion left the water alongside professional triathletes and competed well in the 90km cycling course before retiring from the run section with a leg issue.
Thousands of extra fans turned out to watch the famous face of motorsport compete in Challenge Fuerteventura, which he called “tough but spectacular”. Button was competing with the Ichiban triathlon team.
As a mark of the stiff competition, Camilla Pedersen from Denmark won the lady’s race even though a serious bike crash last year left her in a coma for a number of weeks. She led from the start and finished with a six minute lead.
