Tirunesh Dibaba played an old hand at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow when she tucked in with the pack until the final two laps of the women’s 10,000m final.
Dibaba put on a top-class performance, watching the screen as she rounded the final bend for a smooth sprint victory, claiming the 2013 World Championship in style.
After a steady 23 laps, Dibaba lengthened her stride and powered up to a punishing pace, devastating Japanese champion Hitomi Niiya, who had played pacemaker for the majority of the race.
Outclassed and outnumbered, Niiya came fifth to the comfortable team of East Africans who had been cruising in her wake. Gladys Cherono claimed silver, followed by Dibaba’s team mate Belaynesh Oljira.
The result represents Dibaba’s first 10,000m World Championship gold since 2007 in Osaka.
