Williams won the match in two straight sets – in just 59 minutes – following a 6-1 6-1 victory.
Somewhat worryingly for her future opponents in week two, Williams said, after the match, that she was not quite at top form, explaining that she would like to be “more consistent” and to “hit a little deeper.”
If there was any doubt as to the American former World Number One’s desire to lift the Australian Open an incredible fifth time next weekend, those comments would seem to put them to bed: Serena is here to win.
Williams faces Russian Ekaterina Makarova in the Fourth Round after the latter came through a difficult Third Round match with compatriot – and seventh seed – Vera Zvonareva, 7-6 6-1, for a place in the Quarter Finals.
The draw has not become any easier, though, as the top four seeds in the women’s singles, Caroline Wozniacki (1), Petra Kvitová (2), Victoria Azarenka (3) and Maria Sharapova (4) all cruised through their Third Round matches with relative ease – without dropping a set. If Williams wants to reach, and win, another Final in Melbourne, it is felt she will have to beat at least one or two of that tricky quartet.
