Rugby Union: Injury Forces Dafydd Jones’ Retirement

Dafydd Jones, who played rugby union for Wales and Scarlets of the Magners League, has today announced that he is to retire from all rugby following his failure to recover from a shoulder injury suffered during an international match against the All Blacks in November 2009.

Jones, 31, has not played rugby since damaging his left shoulder after coming on as a replacement during that game.

Two attempts at surgery have proved insufficient to reverse nerve damage and damage to the A/C joint of Jones’ shoulder, resulting in the player’s decision to retire from rugby.

Dafydd Jones, who stands 6’3″, played 201 times for Llanelli, as a back row forward between 1997 and 2009, during which time he collected 24 tries. He also appeared 42 times for Wales, for whom he scored twice.

Highlights of his career include appearing in Rugby World Cup 2003, and being part of the 2005 Six Nations Grand Slam winning Wales squad.
