England treated their home fans to an impressive display of rugby union in their home RBS 6 Nations 2011 match with Italy at Twickenham on the afternoon of Saturday 12th February 2011: the hosts ran out 59-13 winners aided by a remarkable four tries from winger Chris Ashton.
Ashton was always on the shoulder of the ball carrier, it seemed, and collected the ball to speed away over the line and grab 20 points courtesy of four excellent finishes, but it proved to be a great team performance from England, who looked strong from the opening minute, as tries were shared throughout the side: Cueto, Tindall, Care and Haskell all also crossing the line in 80 minutes of dominant rugby.
Italy managed to roll a good maul over the England line for Ongaro to touch down, but this was a fleeting moment of glory in an otherwise disappointing display from the Italian side which had performed so well against Ireland a week previously in Rome.
England were also impressive with the boot, missing not a kick, as Flood secured 6 from 6 (5 conversions and 1 pen) and Wilkinson coolly slotted three conversions of his own in a performance which well demonstrated England’s depth from 1 to 22 as well as the confidence they currently enjoy under Martin Johnson.
