Norway will host the 2016 Youth Winter Olympic Games at Lillehammer. The inaugural Youth Winter Olympics will be held in 2012 at Innsbruck in Austria, making the Norwegian event the 2nd ever Youth Winter Olympics.

The bid from Norway was uncontended and received a majority vote. The city of Lillehammer hosted the 1994 Winter Olympics and as such has an experienced team behind the preparations.

Norwegian Minister of Culture Anniken Huitfeldt commented that the games would be a sustainable project:

“Hosting the 2016 Youth Games coincides nicely with existing plans to further develop the Lillehammer region as a winter sports destination, and a number of the arenas used in the 1994 Olympic Games will be reused for the Youth Olympic competitions.”

Over 1,000 young athletes aged between 15 and 18 will compete in Norway when the competition comes around, meaning that competitors might currently be only ten years old.
