Twenty year old NASCAR rookie, Trevor Bayne, became the youngest ever driver to win the Daytona 500 on Sunday 20th February 2011.
The driver, starting only his second ever Sprint Cup race, produced a near-perfect display to take out the historic race. He turned 20 only one day before.
Bayne was driving for Wood Brothers, the oldest team in NASCAR. His was the team’s fifth win in the Daytona 500, though it was their first since 1976. It is their fourth win in the past 20 years, which has been something of a quiet period for the team: they will hope Bayne’s Daytona 500 victory could herald the start of a new era of NASCAR success.
Certainly, the win has turned around the seaon for Wood Brothers already: they announced that they would be racing at Martinsville, the sixth race on this season’s NASCAR schedule; a race they had planned to skip prior to Daytona victory.
