The Ferrari 150° Italia Takes to the Melbourne Track in 2011

Two McLaren drivers topped the Melbourne Grand Prix 2011 second practice session in a rain-hit Albert Park on Friday 25th March 2011.

The crowd frequently had their umbrellas up as they watched 2009 Formula 1 World Champion, Jenson Button, put in the fastest lap of the session, at 1:25.854, narrowly ahead of his teammate, Lewis Hamilton, who posted a time of 1:25.986.

Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso was a mere 15 hundredths of a second behind Hamilton, in third, as the key teams once again looked to be well prepared to be in with a chance this season, after Red Bull had topped the first practice session.

Hispania-Cosworth used most of the session feverishly working away on their car: though Antonio Liuzzi did make it onto the track in the dying seconds, neither of their drivers posted a time in practice.

Once the teams got into race setup, in the final half hour of practice, the times slowed a little, though it looked, once again, as though this season’s main contenders will consist of Ferrari, McLaren and Red Bull.

Tomorrow’s qualifying session is sure to be the time when we really see who has got their engineering organised for 2011.
