Formula 1: Mark Webber Impresses in Malaysian Grand Prix 2011 Practice

Red Bull’s Australian Formula 1 driver, Mark Webber, has impressed in both practice sessions ahead of the 2011 Malaysian Grand Prix, recording the fastest lap in both sessions.

In the first practice round, Webber was fastest, recording a best time of 1:37.651, ahead of Lewis Hamilton and Michael Schumacher, who were 1.66 and 2.14 seconds behind Webber’s blistering pace respectively.

In P2 on Friday, Webber again set the best lap, with a time of 1:36.876, ahead of the two McLaren men, Button and Hamilton, who were just ahead of Webber’s team-mate, the holding champ, Sebastian Vettel, who was fourth best.

The McLaren’s of British pair Button and Hamilton were close to Webber’s pace, however, as Button was just 5 thousandths of a second short of the Australian’s best lap, while Hamilton was only 0.134 seconds short of the pace, too, only 8 tenths of a second ahead of Vettel, indicating that qualifying for the Malaysian GP is sure to be exciting on Saturday.

Michael Schumacher, in the Mercedes, and the ever-reliable Filipe Massa in the Ferrari were notable performers in both practice sessions, showing that they are likely to feature highly in both qualifying and race, as fans of Formula 1 look to get a good idea of who is likely to shine in the 2011 season, after Vettel’s run-away success in Melbourne.
