How Long is this race?
This race is half a furlong.
How long is a furlong?
A furlong is one eigth of a mile, or 220 yards, which is to say, 201.168 metres, for the metric-minded.
How long is this half furlong race?
Half a furlong is therefore 110 yards, or a tiny touch over 100 metres. The replay above, is therefore, essentially a 100 metre sprint for horses.
Bearing in mind they clocked around 8 seconds, you can see they are fairly flying, but not, interesting, that much faster than a human over this very short distance.
Usain Bolt’s World Record would see him in the picture for most of this race, though the speed endurance of a thoroughbred and faster top speed comes into play even though accelerating an animal as large as a horse would see a human sprinter at an initial advantage from a standing start (but, probably, not on this dirt surface!).
All many moot points, but interesting nonetheless.
