Racing TV published this video item, entitled “Snow problem for THE THINKER in the 1987 Cheltenham Gold Cup – Racing TV” – below is their description.
A snowstorm and a delay of 80 minutes helped The Thinker, ridden by Ridley Lamb, win the 1987 Cheltenham Gold Cup in dramatic circumstances.
The race was put back twice after failed inspections before they eventually came under starter’s orders.
Arthur Stephenson, trainer of The Thinker, was not in attendnce to see his horse win £41,000, the richest prize in the history of the race at the time, or to collect the trophy from the Queen Mother. Instead, he was at Hexham to saddle other runners from his stable.
