Remember this? Shane Kelly times it just right on the mercurial GEORDIELAND in 2008 Yorkshire Cup

Racing TV published this video item, entitled “Remember this? Shane Kelly times it just right on the mercurial GEORDIELAND in 2008 Yorkshire Cup” – below is their description.

The brilliantly quirky Geordieland wins the 2008 Emirates Yorkshire Cup at York’s Dante meeting.

Jamie Osborne’s stayer was given an ultra-patient ride by Shane Kelly and that paid off as the 13/2 chance nailed Royal And Regal by a head.

Neil Callan was allowed to dictate in front on Michael Jarvis’s John Porter winner and looked to have ridden a perfect race, but he was caught and passed almost in the shadow of the post.

Kelly said: “The plan was if we were going to get beat it would be for coming too late. He got me out of trouble when he quickened up really well.

“Even though we had three or four lengths to make up on Neil (Callan), I was always pretty sure I was going to get there. It would be unfair to crab him. That’s just his style and I wouldn’t mind riding some more like him.”

Geordieland became something of a cult hero for punters in the staying division and was twice placed in the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot, although getting his head home in front was never easy given his habit of pulling himself up as soon as he hit the front.
