Horse racing at the UK’s Kempton Park was delayed for at least half an hour after an horrific four horse pile-up in the 3.20 race at the all-weather course on the afternoon of Monday 31 October 2016.
The incident, which involved four horses and their jockeys – including champion Jim Crowley – has left Crowley and Freddy Tylicki injured on the track for some time. Steve Drowne and Ted Durcan, who were also involved, were able to make their way gingerly back to the weighing room.
Tylicki was riding Nellie Deen who was second exiting the home turn. His mount clipped heels with Madame Butterfly, the leader and eventual winner of the race, before tumbling, and bringing down Electrify (Jim Crowley), Skara Mae (Steve Drowne) and Sovrano Dolce (Ted Durcan).
It is understood the horses were not seriously hurt.
According to The Racing Post and broadcaster Racing UK, an air ambulance was also called to the track, while medical staff were still attending to Crowley and Tylicki around an hour after the incident.
UPDATE – the rest of the card at Kempton was abandoned. It was reported by Racing UK that Tylicki (air ambulance) and Crowley (road ambulance) were both taken to hospital.
How are the poor horses?
