Grand National 2010 Preview

Big Fella Thanks is likely to start favourite with the bookmakers, and, due to a good run last time out at Newbury, which was highly rated, and a strong 6th in last year’s Grand National, is considered a great each-way prospect with another year’s experience under his belt.

Cloudy Lane is owned by Trevor Hemmings, who has won this race in the past. More importantly, the horse put down an excellent marker in each of his last two starts. Cloudy Lane failed to complete in last year’s Grand National, but was placed 6th in 2008, showing he has what it takes to complete this tricky course.

Piraya is lightly weighted thanks to showing little on course to date, except for a strong performance over 2m4f at Warwick on his penultimate start which indicated the horse is in good form, and, assuming the distance is within reach (Piraya has never gone further than 3m110yards), is a live outsider at a super-long price.

Eric’s Charm our best bet of the 2010 Grand National won his last two starts over long distances, showing good time on the clock, as well as a tendancy to stay well over long distances. While luck in running is needed by all in the Grand National, this old stager has probably his last chance at 12 years old tomorrow, and given a clear round, could well make the frame in this event.

Mon Mome we couldn’t review the card for the 2010 Grand National without mentioning last year’s sensational 100/1 winner, Mon Mome. The big question is, will he do it again? The answer, at least according to the form book, is “no”. Mon Mome is eight pounds heavier than last year, and it is doubtful he is eight pounds better. Half a stone is a huge amount over four and a half miles, and this is a high class field. Expect the winner to come from lower in the handicap, though it is always dangerous to discount a horse which has done well on course and distance before. We don’t expect Mon Mome to make lightning strike twice, but the horse is as genuine as they come, and we’d love to see it happen.

Other notable horses who could produce for followers include previous winner Comply or Die and grey favourite King Johns Castle. State of Play is a horse who has shown ability over the National course and big fences who could win this if back to his best, but consistency seems to have gone from this horse’s locker of late, so it would be a real gamble!

Whatever you choose in this year’s Grand National, have fun, and enjoy the spectacle.
