Mark Webber left it fairly late to produce a stunning lap round the streets of Monaco to claim his second pole position in succession during the Monaco Grand Prix 2010 Qualifying this afternoon.
Webber produced a lap of 1:14.104 to grab pole from Robert Kubica who looked to have blitzed the field in Q3 with a lap of 1:14.284.
Webber’s Red Bull Racing teammate Sebastian Vettel was the penultimate man to cross the finish line at the end of qualifying, and he grabbed a late late third position with a lap of 1:14.227.
Kubica’s Renault teammate, Petrov, pushed too hard in Q2 and slammed his Renault into the wall after losing the back end at the first corner when looking to get into the top ten to qualify for Q3. Petrov managed 14th place before crashing out.
Fernando Alonso will start at the back of the grid for Ferrari after crashing out in this morning’s practice session.
World Champion Jenson Button will be frustrated only to have made 8th place in his McLaren, while Rosberg and Schumacher showed good pace at times in their Mercedes machines. Rosberg in particular will be annoyed that his hottest lap came in Q2, and that he could only manage 6th place in the final session.
