Rather than contest charges of fixing the result of the 2008 Singapore Grand Prix, the head of Renault’s Formula 1 team, Flavio Briatore, has stood down today.

Pat Symonds, the team’s engineering executive has also left the team.

The FIA had asked Renault to answer after Nelson Piquet Jr made allegations that his crash in last year’s Singapore Grand Prix was done on team orders.

Piquet made the allegation after having been sacked by Renault.

Briatore’s decision to resign rather than answer the charges leaves doubt over what, if any, action the FIA will take against the team: an official statement is yet to be made by the sport’s governing body.
