The second leg of the UEFA Europa League 2011/12 Round of 32 matches took place this week, with 16 teams making it through to the Round of 16 phase.
There were strong home and away wins for Manchester City, who saw off last years winners, FC Porto, with a 6-1 aggregate victory, and Metalist Kharkiv, who were the biggest aggregate winners of the round, as they defeated SV Salzburg 8-1 over the two legs.
Other good wins came from PSV Eindhoven who won 4-1 on aggregate from Trabzonspor, and Atletico Madrid, who defeated Lazio by the same aggregate scoreline.
Manchester United and Besiktas made it through despite losing the second leg at home to Ajax and Braga respectively.
Athletic Bilbao and Standard Liege both needed away goals to get them through their ties, and there was great drama in Germany, as Shalke needed 30 minutes of Extra Time to record a 3-1 home win over Plzen which sent them through as 4-2 aggregate winners, having been absolutely all square at 1-1 (agg 2-2) at the end of 90 minutes.
